“IF YOU AIN’T FIRST, YOU’RE LAST” WHEN ALL THINGS SEEM EQUAL, WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE?

In all of the major sporting events throughout the United States, rules and regulations are used to put teams and professional athletes on a somewhat level playing field. There are many examples I could use for this blog, but I am going to focus on an American racing favorite, yes…..NASCAR.

Even if you are not a fan of the sport, there is something to be said for the talent that these teams employ to hopefully one day become champions. Not to mention the adrenaline rush from driving with 40+ other drivers around a track at sometimes over 200mph. When you are in the stands, you can feel the energy from the cars like an earthquake is happening. It truly is amazing and yes I am a fan and could talk all day about racing, but back to business and how it relates to Talent.

NASCAR has put a multitude of rules and regulations in place for different reasons. The one I will focus on today is about creating an equal playing field to increase the competitiveness. Examples such as the weight of a car, how many people can work on the car at one time, and how high off the ground the car can be are just a few to keep parity and fairness.

Ricky Bobby (ficticious NASCAR driver from Taledega Nights movie) states, “If you ain’t first, you’re last”, and it begs the question, why do the same teams win consistently year over year when the myriad of rules are the same for everyone?

It boils down to Talent.

Not just drivers, but a team of talented people. From the individuals who work on the cars during each pivotal pit stop to the talent that designs and engineers top 03172014bperforming machines, it truly takes a well-functioning team with skills, talents, attitude, and experiences to win each year. So how do the owners recruit the top people?

From many years of following teams and working with companies that build engineering and Tech teams for large projects, having a competitive advantage begins when identifying the talent pool that is specifically needed for their future success. Like racing teams, when a team owner has access to the entire talent pool of potential candidates, let’s say the engine design team, then they are able to target the best of the best. But identifying potential talent based on skills and experiences is only the beginning. The data collected throughout this process is vital, as data points around compensation, geography, competitive structure, and trends will lead a team to discover new talent pools in areas they never expected. An example might be that instead of pulling talent from other teams in their market, they identify talent from other circuits or even a different industry altogether that employ people with similar skill sets. The point is data provides more insight and understanding on what and how a team can gain the best strategic advantage in order to win consistently.
